A minute in the mind of Meredith Hepner Chapman

December 20, 2016

If you follow any local businesses on Instagram it’s likely you will already have seen the very glamorous Meredith Hepner Chapman gracing your newsfeed. Meredith represents many of our favourite local businesses both in running their social media but also promoting their brands. With a list of business sponsors and contacts we can only dream of, Meredith really is the lady with connections in Tring. I was so excited to have the opportunity to meet her and find out how it all works…

Hi Meredith, how are you?

Fantastic and thankfully very busy!

What have you been up today?

Every day is different but I started the day (like so many) checking social media — I’ll be checking and updating clients’ social media platforms and catching up what’s trending and hot topics of the day. It’s vital that posts are fresh and relevant (and I’m a stickler for correct grammar.) It’s non-stop. It’s great, but the world of social media never stops and I have to be on the case if there’s a comment to acknowledge or an enquiry.

Sounds interesting. Is it all about social media, then?

To a degree. It all started about 5 years ago. I realised what felt like a recreational activity could actually become a career. I saw how social media was making the world smaller (Facebook hit 1 billion log-ins in 2015 making it the largest marketing platform in the world) so I started to pitch to local businesses. Moving up from London I loved the supportive network in Tring and wanted to bring something else to the businesses — manage their social media but also create a networking group. It took some time to persuade them, but if there was a business I particularly loved I posted about it and generated immediate interest — I guess it was the FOMO effect (fear of missing out) but it worked! Now I have so many wonderful clients.

That’s great! So it’s all about Facebook, Twitter and Instagram then?

Yes, and Google plus, looking at raising SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) but its much more than that. I’m not your average Social Media Manager. Every post is bespoke to the business, it’s not about link dumping or mass pre-loading. Plus I only work with businesses I believe in and say what I believe about them. Integrity is hugely important. People aren’t stupid and I think it’s clear that I genuinely love and believe in every business I work with.

Beyond social media, I’m also a Brand Ambassador –I promote products for businesses via my social media platforms. We have some amazingly innovative businesses here in the Chilterns – there’s a real London vibe of hustle and excitement at the moment. I also blog and copywrite for people and I feature as a regular panellist BBC 3 Counties Radio showbiz hour.

That’s pretty cool! Sounds like you’re a bit of a celebrity yourself in Tring, then…

Oh gosh no! Maybe? Hadn’t really thought of that — probably more known for my love of Leopard print;) — but I suppose life is always interesting and constantly changing. I’m very lucky to know an interesting mix of amazing people, both professionally and personally. I think what makes this job for me is the people I work with, they’ve become like family & we are our own networking group. All bouncing ideas off each other and helping to grow.

Well I’m truly impressed. What more could a girl want?!

Funny you should say that but I’m currently just looking at developing training for local businesses to support them running their own social media programmes. Because there’s only so many hours in the day and I don’t contract out any work I wanted to be able to train and support businesses to manage their own social media successfully and not be frightened (because as you know one misjudged post can be the end of a company!) There are a lot of very obvious pitfalls and I really want to give something back from my years of promoting business.

As it’s Christmas, I was wondering if you could share some of your plans for the new year…

2017 looks set to be super exciting! I’ll be working with some fabulous new clients on a health and wellbeing project. After I’ve massaged down 18 tins of quality street (yeah, that not eating sugar thing gets somewhat overlooked in December Chez HepChap) this will come as a blessed gift and I will get my Madonna arms back! Loads more Vlogs and working with specialists on quick, easy, busy parent food which is fast and convenient but seriously healthy and without any white stuff (as I’m in PR I should reiterate that’s sugar schweedie — this isn’t a Betty Ford admittance 😉 ) We’ll also be filming lifestyle and beauty blogs and working with clients on social media training — sharing the love…and I’ve already got 3 blogs lined up which I can’t wait to get my teeth into…then the second week in January..Yup super busy already…but who’s complaining!

2016 was brutal for so many, so let’s make 2017 a good one! I’m so lucky to work with such awesome people, I honestly cannot wait to see what the new year brings.

Wow — I feel exhausted just hearing about it! How do you do it?! Thanks MHC its been great talking. Can’t wait to watch out for your future ventures on all your platforms.
