Do you ever get that ‘different day same shit’ feeling – it’s possible that we all do at times as after all that’s the reality of life isn’t it?
Well it doesn’t have to be. We all have a choice when it comes to how we respond to situations even if the circumstances are out of our control. Sometimes the biggest challenge to ensuring things turn out differently is recognising that we can do something differently to achieve an alternative outcome.
Seems simple right? Well let’s explore how purely thinking this way can ensure that 2019 will be the year that is different from any other so far – here are five behaviours/ habits you can create that will directly impact your achievements and outcomes.
1. Develop a stretch mindset
A stretch mindset is a way of being, thinking and believing that you can create the future you want for yourself—even if there are things that get in your way or things that seem to weigh you down.
It is incredible the amount of people who have a limited mindset, where they believe that they have a predetermined life and cannot influence the outcome. Feeling this way is energy draining so knowing that in fact you can approach anything with a mindset of curiosity enables you to stretch your current way of thinking.
2. Think about your goals for 2019, and this time write them down and share them.
Dream becomes a goal when you give it a timeframe and a clear starting point. Goals become achievable when you write them down and share them with someone. Some states to demonstrate this:
30% of self-verbalised goals are achieved
60% of written goals are achieved
90% + of written and shared goals are achieved – accountability buddies
I bet you can think of people who daydream big, who re-write business plans, seek out mentors, listen to podcasts and still struggle to achieve the great plans and dreams that they have. Perhaps this describes you, it certainly has described me at times.
Establish your goals, create an action plan on how you will achieve those goals and then actually do it. The plan could be scribbled on a scrap of paper or napkin. The process of writing it down makes it real. It transcends a dream to a viable way to achieve your desires. Writing helps you fine tune and focus your thoughts. It prods you to turn a concept into a road map. Having it in writing will serve to keep you committed and honest with yourself. The next part will be harder: you have to keep track of your daily progress and hold yourself accountable without excuses. This is where having an accountability buddy can be really helpful.
3. Remain chilled about the tasks in hand even if they seem enormous. Let’s break them down.
You have a mindset of curiosity that is in place, a goal and supporting plan all written down – so what next? Simple, check that your plan is made up of small daily habits and routines that you can accomplish. Slowly and methodically working away so you can make incremental progress and start to see the building blocks in place. Use your time effectively and block out portions of your diary and allocate them to specific tasks. By breaking these steps into a daily plan, it won’t seem so overwhelming.
4. Daily affirmations aren’t only for tree huggers or Buddhist monks.
Affirmations are positive statements that describe a desired situation or goal. These positive statements are repeated often, in order to get them impressed on the unconscious mind.
The act of repeating the affirmations, motivates, inspires, and programs the mind to act according to the repeated words. This process triggers the unconscious mind to strive and to work on the person’s behalf, to make the positive statements come true.
Making these affirmations as sensory based as you can and writing them as if they are already happening e.g. ‘I am instead of I will’ enables the unconscious mind to actively think in a supporting way driving you to act and behaviour accordingly.
When you know how to use affirmations, you gain a useful tool for achieving success and for improving your life … boom
Many people repeat in their minds negative words and statements concerning the situations and events in their lives, and consequently, create undesirable situations. Words work both ways, to build or destroy. It is the way we use them that determines whether they are going to bring good or harmful results.
Your unconscious mind will take what you say at face value, and act accordingly looking for evidence to support the way you think….eek this is something to be mindful of, use the language that supports your goals and desired ways of being. No looking back here 😊
5. See your future success with visualization.
Visualization is the art of creating an image in your mind of having already achieved your goal. Playing this movie in your head repeatedly and using your imagination to see yourself as having achieved the goal as well as using sensory based information will make the visualisation more compelling. Picture living in that beautiful new home. Visualize yourself as the healthy, fit individual you want to become. See yourself as the successful business owner.
You will attract what you focus on. It’s a mental hack to visualize that you already have what you desire. Rather than wishing you will achieve it (or hoping one day it will miraculously happen), live and feel it as if it is happening to you right now. The unconscious mind cannot distinguish between what is real and what is imagined. It will work with what you give it- so make it present and compelling.
So here we are in 2019, now make it different, adopt a mindset of curiosity, develop your goals into a doable plan, remain chilled, repeat your affirmations and see yourself achieving your goals. Make it real, make it powerful, make it now.
